According to a news report in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the fatal crash occurred the morning of August 19, 2010 on San Juan Road near San Miguel Canyon Road. Witnesses report that Arnold’s Camry was weaving in the westbound lane of traffic when it crossed over to the eastbound lane. A 16-year-old passenger in the Camry sustained major injuries as did the 24-year-old driver of the Silverado. Officials are looking into what caused the accident.

I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Gregory Robert Arnold for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. I also wish the two seriously injured victims of this crash the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep these victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Car accident statistics

Aromas is the only census-designated place in California that straddles two counties – San Benito and Monterey. According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), four people died and 240 were injured in car accidents in San Benito County. During the same year, there were 40 fatalities and 1,470 injuries involving car accidents in Monterey County.

What Caused this Fatal Car Crash

Based on this news report, it appears that the teen driver, Arnold, for some reason, was driving erratically at the time of the collision. I trust officials are looking into whether he was under the influence, distracted, speeding or driving recklessly at the time. I trust they are also looking into whether this accident was the result of a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction.

Fault and Liability

If this crash is determined to have been Arnold's fault, then, the injured victims in this case can file a claim against his estate and liability insurance. When victims sustain major injuries, typically, they or their families are faced with a mountain of medical bills and other expenses such as loss of wages and property damage. Victims in such cases can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, long-term care and other related damages. An experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer will be able to advise injured victims and their families about their legal rights and options in such cases.

What are some steps you take to reduce the likelihood of your teen driver getting into an accident?

According to a news report in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the injury collision occurred the afternoon of August 12, 2010 on West Beach Street in Pajaro Dunes.

The teen driver allowed a front tire of her 1992 Subaru Legacy to go onto the gravel shoulder of the roadway, overcorrected, before entering opposing lanes of traffic. She then crashed head-on into a 1993 Geo Prizm. The 27-year-old driver of the Prizm and his 44-year-old male passenger sustained fractures and internal injuries. The teen driver of the Subaru, her mother and two other teens in the back seat suffered minor injuries, while another 16-year-old girl sustained major leg injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to everyone who was injured in this tragic crash. I wish them all the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Teen Driving Statistics

According to a 2008 study released by the Auto Club, car accidents involving teen drivers, ages 15 to 17, costs California about $2.8 billion annually and more than $34 billion nationwide. This is money that includes medical expenses, loss of wages, property damage, loss of quality of life and other related expenses for the year 2006. These numbers were reportedly calculated based on 66,785 crashes that occurred in 2006. That includes 177 fatalities and 27,869 personal injuries, according to the report.

Importance of a GDL Program

In this particular case, officials say the teen did nothing wrong and followed all the rules. But her inexperience proved costly for the two men and a young girl who were seriously injured in this crash. Such accidents remind us of the importance of improving the graduated driver licensing (GDL) program in California. GDL has been a proven measure to reduce injuries and deaths from accidents involving teen drivers. GDL eases teens into driving by requiring them to practice more, and limits their exposure to danger by requiring them, for example, not to drive at night.

In 1998, the state of California enacted a new law requiring all new teen drivers to go through a three-step process in order to get a driver's license. This includes going through 50 hours of supervised driving. However, in this particular case, the accident happened in spite of the fact that all rules were followed. This clearly shows more needs to be done to ensure the safety of our youngest drivers and others with whom they share the roads.

Victims' Claim for Compensation

Victims of such accidents would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer to get more information about their legal rights and options. Victims and their families could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, long-term care and other related damages.

What steps do you take as a parent to ensure that the teen drivers in your home are safe?

In a recent case, a nursing home in Los Altos, California, was fined $100,000 for alleged negligence that resulted in the death of an 85-year-old resident. According to CBS News report, a California Department of Public Health investigation determined that the staff at Pilgrim Haven Health Facility "failed to provide adequate supervision and assistance to a resident who had a history of failing."

Officials say the elderly man, who was suffering from dementia, called out for help after he fell in December. He told a nursing assistant that he did not hit his head. Hours after the fall, he became ill and unresponsive. He was then transferred to a hospital where he died the next day. Head injuries were ruled as the cause of death in his case.

My heart goes out to the family of this elderly man who believed that he would get proper care and attention in this nursing home. Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.

Increasing Incidence of Neglect

In this particular case, the nursing home received the highest possible fine or an AA citation, which is handed out for the most serious types of violations. Almost always, these citations are issued in cases where the nursing home's actions directly cause serious personal injuries or death.

According to a 2008 Government Accountability Office (GAO) 1,285 nursing homes were cited in 2007 for "actual harm or immediate jeopardy" to residents. Based on GAO's statistics, California leads all other states, by far, in the number of citations. Understaffing and lack of training are the most common factors linked to nursing home neglect.

Putting Profits Ahead of People

According to a report by the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR), turnover rates in nursing homes among nursing assistants in 2002 was over 80 percent in 19 states and 100 percent in 10 states. The same report also cites a 2005 analysis of nursing home staffing data, which shows that the proportion of care provided by registered nurses is on the decline despite increases in Medicare funding specifically set aside for nursing.

A number of these tragedies occur because nursing homes put profit ahead of the people they are supposed to serve. Families of victims who have been harmed by nursing home neglect or abuse would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will ensure that the wrongdoers are held accountable. Where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, the family of a deceased victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for their irreparable loss.

Do you have a loved one in a nursing home? What are some serious concerns you have about their well-being and care?

According to a news report in the San Francisco Chronicle, the man was found fatally injured at the corner of 19th and Folsom streets. Police have determined that his injuries are consistent with being struck by a vehicle and that the vehicle that hit him fled the scene. No vehicle or driver descriptions have been made available at this point. Anyone who may have seen this collision is asked to call San Francisco police officials at 415-553-1575.

Pedestrian Hit in Crosswalk

Police are also looking for the hit-and-run driver who struck and critically injured another man at the corner of Golden Gate Avenue and Hyde Street in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco. According to a news report in the San Francisco Appeal, this major injury pedestrian accident occurred the morning of July 28, 2010, when a man in this early 30s was crossing Golden Gate in a marked crosswalk. It was then, a vehicle, which is being described as a newer model, silver four-door sedan, possibly an Oldsmobile, hit the pedestrian as it attempted a turn. The car's driver did not stop after the collision.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families. In the most recent case, the victim died. In last week's collision, the hit-and-run victim is still fighting for his life. I truly hope the suspects in both cases are quickly apprehended and brought to justice. I offer my deepest sympathies to the family members of the deceased pedestrian. I pray for the speedy and complete recovery of the critically injured pedestrian.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

According to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run collisions that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved injuries. There were a total of 247 deaths in 2008 involving hit-and-run collisions statewide.

Laws and Liability Issues

Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." In one of the cases, a surveillance camera clearly shows the pedestrian crossing in a marked crosswalk with a green light. In that case the driver also failed to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, which is a violation of California Vehicle Code section 21950 (a).

In such cases, it would be in the best interests of victims and their families to consult with an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise victims and their families about how their own auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run collision or in a case where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.

What are some of the most hazardous roadways for pedestrians in your city or neighborhood?

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that the boy and his 1-year-old sister were seated in a double stroller and were getting back from a walk with their father near Graton. As they were about to get in their car, the stroller was struck by a vehicle. The boy suffered head injuries. His sister and father escaped with minor injuries. The driver did not stop and fled the scene of the accident.

I hope the little boy has not suffered catastrophic injuries in this crash. I hope the hit-and-run driver is apprehended and brought to justice. What a nightmare for this family! I wish the injured child the very best for a quick and full recovery. He and his family members will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Pedestrian Accidents

One fatality and 15 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County, according to California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Also, countywide, pedestrian accidents claimed four lives and injured 111 during the same year.

It is indeed fortunate that the two victims did not sustain major injuries. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics and Possible Causes

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 35 fatalities and 3,577 injuries involving car accidents in San Francisco.

Based on this news report, it is not clear how or why this bus accident occurred. We also don't know if the injured victims were in the other vehicle or passengers in the bus. What we do know is that this accident occurred at a San Francisco intersection. It is possible that one of the vehicles failed to yield right-of-way to the other or ran a red light.

Laws and Liability Issues

California law requires drivers to yield right-of-way to oncoming vehicles. According to California Vehicle Code section 21800 (a): "The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway."

Bus companies, whether they are public or private carriers, owe their passengers the highest "duty of care," which means that their greatest responsibility is the safe transport of their passengers. In this case, I trust officials are looking into who was at fault. If the bus driver was at fault, both, the driver and his employer could be held liable for the accident and injuries caused.

In such cases, it would be in the best interests of injured victims to contact an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of the accident and make sure that the negligent parties are held liable for their actions. Victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages. Also, any claim against a California governmental entity must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury, under California law.

Do you feel safe traveling in a Muni or transit vehicle? We would like to hear your thoughts.

CBS News reports that the accident occurred the morning of June 14, 2010 when a taxi went out of control on an off-ramp on Highway 280, crashed and caught fire. The driver and two others got out of the taxi, but one of the occupants, a woman, was fatally injured. Officials are attempting to determine what caused this accident.

My heart goes out to everybody who knew and loved this deceased victim. I offer my deepest sympathies to her family members and friends. I also hope that the injured victims have a speedy and complete recovery. They will be in my prayers.

San Francisco Car Accidents

There were 35 deaths and 3,577 injuries involving car accidents in San Francisco, according to data from California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS).

Car Accident Causes and Liability Issues

The news report states that the taxi driver saw smoke come out of the car and attempted to apply the brakes, but they did not work. It is not known what make or model the taxi was. It would be interesting to find out if this accident was the result of an auto product defect or poor vehicle maintenance.

In such cases, it is very important that the vehicle be preserved intact so it can be examined thoroughly by an expert for any evidence of product defects or malfunctions. If this accident was the result of an auto product defect, then, the auto maker or manufacturer of the defective auto product could be held liable. If the accident was caused by poor vehicle maintenance, the driver as well as his employer or the company that was responsible for maintaining the vehicle could be held liable. The best San Francisco personal injury lawyers will always offer a free and comprehensive consultation to injured victims and their families.

According to a Bay City News report, the fatal accident occurred near East Santa Clara and Seventh streets in downtown San Jose.

Hit-and-Run Suspects Apprehended

Police have apparently been investigating this case over the last two years. They first recovered a dark blue 1990s Toyota 4Runner, the car they say Ramos was driving when he struck the victim. Solorzano was the registered owner and brother-in-law of Ramos. Authorities say Solorzano helped Ramos hide the evidence. Both men have been arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. Anyone with further information is asked to call police investigators at 408-277-4654.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Maria Dolores Acosta de Reyes. I can only imagine the relief her family members must feel after these arrests. They will be in my thoughts and prayers. This case shows that hit-and-run victims must not give up hope too soon. I commend the San Jose Police Department for keeping this case alive and successfully making the arrests.

Laws and Liability Issues

Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."

Drivers who are involved in car accidents are required to stop at the scene, regardless of who is at fault. Motorists are required to exchange information with other parties such as address, insurance information and contact details, and also render aid to the injured victim. Drivers are required to do this regardless of whose fault the accident was. There are many cases where drivers who are not at fault get arrested because they fled the scene of the accident.

I trust officials are interviewing these two suspects to determine the circumstances of the crash. The victim's family would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, if they haven't done so already. A knowledgeable attorney will make sure that their legal rights are protected through the process and that they receive fair compensation for their loss.

Would you offer a tip about a hit-and-run collision to law enforcement if they cannot keep your information anonymous?

According to a Bay City News report Bronson was riding his motorcycle west on Pepper Road near Meacham Road, the night of May 8, 2010, when it went off the roadway and struck a utility pole. Bronson was traveling at the posted speed limit, but failed to negotiate a left bend in the road, California Highway Patrol officials said. Bronson was also wearing full riding gear when the accident occurred. He died at the scene. It is not yet known whether alcohol was a factor in this fatal crash.

I offer my heartfelt sympathies to everyone who knew and loved Thomas Edward Bronson for their tragic and devastating loss. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 18 injuries reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in Petaluma. In Sonoma County as a whole motorcycle accidents claimed six lives and caused 166 injuries during the same year.

What Caused the Motorcycle Accident?

Based on this news report, it is not clear what exactly caused Bronson to lose control of his motorcycle. It seems as if he was a safe rider. It is true we are still not sure whether alcohol was involved. But the report states that he was traveling at speed limit and was wearing full riding gear. There are a few questions that remain here. Was there a vehicle defect in the Harley that caused Bronson to lose control and crash? Did a dangerous or defective roadway play a part in this tragic accident? Were there any other vehicles involved? For example, was Bronson run off the roadway by another vehicle? I trust CHP officials are looking into these and other factors in order to get some answers in this case.

Liability Issues

If an auto product defect was involved, the manufacturer of the defective auto could be held liable. If a dangerous or defective roadway caused the accident, then the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could be held liable as well. Please remember that any such claim against a governmental entity in California must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injuries. An experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families about their legal rights and options.

What precautions would you suggest motorcyclists take to avoid accidents?

According to a CBS News report, the 27-year-old man was walking north on Huntwood Avenue at West Tennyson Road the evening of May 5, 2010, when he was struck by an SUV that was turning from northbound Huntwood to westbound Tennyson. The driver fled the scene of the collision and was last seen heading west on Tennyson. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with major injuries, but he is expected to survive.

Police have determined that the pedestrian was walking in the crosswalk and had the "walk" signal at the time. However, investigators say, the SUV rushed into the intersection in order to beat a red light. The suspect vehicle is described as a white, newer-model American-made SUV, possibly a Chevy Tahoe. The vehicle also has possible damage to its front grill and headlight area. If you have information about this suspect driver or vehicle, please call the Hayward Police Department at 510-293-7099.

My heart goes out to this car accident victim, who has obviously suffered severe injuries. However, I'm glad to hear that he is recovering. I wish him the best for a quick and complete recovery. He will be in my prayers.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

According to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run collisions that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved serious injuries. There were 247 deaths in 2008, slightly up from 243 fatalities in 2004 involving hit-and-run crashes in California.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

In this particular case, officials have determined that the driver of the SUV was at fault for this major injury collision. California law requires motorists to remain at the scene of an accident irrespective of whose fault the incident is. It is the motorist's duty to stay until authorities arrive, exchange important information and get help for the injured victim. Of course, in this case, the driver decided to flee the scene. I truly hope officials apprehend this driver and bring him or her to justice.

Claim for Compensation

Hit-and-run accidents not only drain families emotionally, but also financially. Injured victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will make sure that their legal rights are protected. An experienced car accident lawyer will also advise victims about how their car insurance policy applies to a situation where the hit-and-run driver is never located or if the at-fault driver turns out to be uninsured or underinsured.

How can we reduce the number of hit-and-run accidents in California? What can we do to deter drivers from leaving the scene of a crash?
