Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 260 deaths and 27,110 injuries happened involving car accidents in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during 2007.

What Caused this Car Accident?

Based on this news report, it's not clear exactly how or why this car accident occurred. There is no mention of whether alcohol or drugs was involved or whether the driver fell asleep at the wheel. There are several questions here. Was there a vehicle defect of mechanical malfunction that caused this car crash? Was there another vehicle involved in this accident? For example, was this vehicle run off the roadway by another driver? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which caused the driver of this vehicle to lose control and crash?

Liability Issues

If there was a dangerous condition on the roadway, then the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway could be held liable for the accident and serious injuries. Any claim against a governmental agency in California must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.

In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to consult with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney, who will advise them about their legal rights and options. In cases where an auto product defect is suspected, the vehicle should be preserved in its crashed state, unaltered, so it can be examined thoroughly by an expert for vehicle defects, mechanical malfunctions and other evidence.
