Two people were injured in a truck accident after a tractor-trailer failed to stop for slowing traffic and rear-ended a vehicle, triggering a chain reaction crash. According to a news report in The Californian, the major injury collision occurred the afternoon of July 6, 2010 near Greenfield. California Highway Patrol officials said traffic was slow because of construction. This was when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a Chevy Tahoe, which then struck a silver Dodge, which in turn struck a Honda Civic.

The female driver of the Tahoe was the most seriously injured. She was airlifted to a San Francisco Bay Area hospital for treatment of major injuries. The driver of the Dodge was transported to an area hospital. But the extent that person's injuries is not known. The occupants of the Civic or the big-rig were not hurt. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to the two injured victims of this crash. I wish them both the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep them in your prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to CHP's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 20 injuries involving car accidents in Greenfield, California. In Monterey County as a whole, 40 people died and 1,470 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Causes and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the tractor-trailer failed to stop or slow down for traffic. I trust officials are looking into why the truck driver slammed into the vehicles ahead. Was the driver under the influence at the time? Was he or she distracted by something in the vehicle? Was the truck driver speeding or traveling recklessly or negligent in some other way? I trust officials are looking into how or why this injury collision occurred and who was responsible for it.

If the truck driver is determined to have been at fault, the driver as well as the employer – the trucking company could be held financially responsible for the victims' injuries. They could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation and other related damages.
