A woman was critically injured in a car accident in Los Angeles after the car she was driving crashed into a Los Angeles Police Department squad car at an intersection in Venice, California. According to a CBS news report, the injury car accident occurred at the intersection of Venice Boulevard and Glyndon Avenue early morning October 16, 2009.

My heart goes out to the injured victims in this car accident. I hope all of them make a quick and complete recovery. They will be in my prayers.

Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 260 deaths and 27,110 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 712 fatalities and 56,475 injuries were reported in 2007 as a result of car accidents.

Apparently there are conflicting reports with regard to how and why this collision occurred. One news report states that this crash was not the result of a police pursuit and that the squad car was not responding to any calls at the time. Another news article states that the police officers were responding to a call for service, but that the driver ran a red light and crashed into the police car. The driver of the other car was seriously injured while the police officers sustained moderate injuries.

Car Accident Investigations are Complex

I am extremely concerned that all the facts come out in this case. I'm worried when I hear that the LAPD is going to be investigating its own officers. In my opinion, an outside agency such as the Sheriff's Department or the CHP should be investigating this accident so they can perform a fair and objective investigation. Eyewitness accounts are crucial in such cases in order to determine who was at fault, especially when there is a dispute in that regard.

If you saw this car accident or have any information about this incident, please contact the California Highway Patrol or please call my office at 1-800-561-4887 so we can pass on this important information to the appropriate agency. Eyewitness accounts can help ensure that the person who was truly at fault for this accident is held accountable. If this victim's family believes that the officers were at fault here, they should be consulting with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer right away. It is important that this investigation is done in a timely manner because any claim against a governmental agency in California must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.
