An 84-year-old woman who was killed in a December 1, 2009 San Diego car accident has been identified as Shirley Frank. The fatal car accident occurred at the intersection of Third Avenue and Fredericka Parkway when the car in which Frank was a passenger, was broadsided by another vehicle, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Frank sustained critical injuries in the car accident and was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead a day after the crash.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Shirley Frank. To lose a family member - whether young or old – is always heartbreaking, especially when or loved ones are taken away from us suddenly.

Car Accidents in San Diego

Seven people died and 824 were injured in Chula Vista in 2007 as a result of car accidents, according to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics. In San Diego County as a whole, car accidents claimed 268 deaths and injured 14,641 people in 2007.

Based on this news report, it is not exactly clear how or why this fatal car accident happened. There is no information about the other vehicle, which broadsided this one or information about the driver of that vehicle. The big question in such accidents, most of the time, is whose fault it was. When it comes to street intersection accidents, it is very likely that one of the drivers failed to yield right-of-way to another. It is also possible that one of the drivers ran a red light and caused the accident to occur. The driver who caused the accident could be held liable for the injuries caused to other victims.

Issues that Arise in Car Accident Cases

An experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer will be able to help the victims of such serious or fatal injury cases better understand their legal rights and options. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to determine whether a dangerous condition existed on the roadway, which caused or contributed to this tragic car accident. If that was the case the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can be held liable. Please remember that any claim against a governmental agency in California must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury. A skilled injury lawyer should also advise car accident victims and their families on how their auto insurance policy would apply to incidents involving an uninsured or underinsured driver.
