Two people were injured in an Orange County car accident the morning of January 26, 2010, after a car lost control and slammed into other vehicles waiting on an off-ramp of the 55 Freeway. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, a Honda Civic was traveling west on Chapman, in Orange, when the driver suddenly entered the on-ramp to the southbound lanes of the freeway. The Civic then veered across the on-ramp and the divider before crashing into vehicles that were waiting on the off-ramp for the light at Chapman Avenue. California Highway Patrol officials said the Honda Civic hit a Chevy Silverado, a Ford Ranger, a Mercedes Benz C240 as well as a Honda Odyssey van. The driver of the Civic and Mercedes were injured.

My heart goes out to the injured victims in this case and I wish them both a speedy and complete recovery. It is indeed a relief that more people were not injured given the number of vehicles that were involved here. Please keep these injured victims in your prayers. I hope neither one of them sustained major injuries.

What Caused the Accident?

Based on this news report, it is not clear exactly what caused the driver of the Honda Civic to lose control of her vehicle and strike the other cars. Who is Liable?

In such cases, an accident investigation will usually look into issues such as whether the driver involved was impaired, distracted, or otherwise negligent in causing the accident. In some cases, a mechanical malfunction or an auto product defect could also cause a driver to lose control of his or her vehicle. If the driver, in such an incident, is determined to have been at-fault, he or she could be held liable for the accident and resulting injuries. Car accident victims can usually seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy and other related damages.
