Accident News For Attorneys, the Legal Field & the Public
A motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries in a Los Angeles car accident after he was struck by a vehicle the night of November 30, 2009, City News Service reports. The driver who struck and fatally injured the motorcyclist fled the crash site, Los Angeles police officials said. The Dodge van involved in this crash was apparently going west on 120th Street when its driver went right through a red light and struck the man, who was riding a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle south on Main Street. The motorcyclist died at the scene. The hit-and-run driver is still at large.
Police are describing the fatal hit-and-run vehicle as a white 1980s Dodge van with a blue stripe. The driver is described as a black male with short hair, black jeans and a white shirt with blue stripes. The motorcyclist has not yet been identified, but the news article suggests that he may have been a member of the Street Heat Motorcycle Club.
This is a tragic and heartbreaking loss for everyone who knew and loved this man. This is a perfect example of how motorcyclists could do everything right, take all precautions, wear all safety gear and still get fatally injured. In this case, this victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Please keep his grieving family in your prayers.
Los Angeles Motorcycle Accidents
There were 32 deaths and 1,158 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in 2007, according to CHP's traffic accident statistics. In all of Los Angeles County, 85 fatalities and 2,792 injuries were reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in 2007.
I hope this hit-and-run driver is apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Not only did this driver run a red light and hit the motorcyclist, but he also fled the scene of the accident.
California Car Accident Laws
California law states that drivers who get involved in a car accident must remain at the scene – irrespective of whether the accident was their fault. Drivers are required under law to exchange information such as identification, contact information and insurance details. California Vehicle Code section 20001 states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." This man could be facing felony hit and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges at the least.
The deceased motorcyclist's family would be well advised to consult with a reputed personal injury attorney in Los Angeles, who has an impeccable track record of financially pursuing negligent and drunk drivers and also with wrongful death lawsuits. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will advise victims' families about how their car insurance policy will work in a hit-and-run car accident or when the motorist involved is uninsured or underinsured.

Unfortunately, car accidents remain one of the leading causes of deaths. Adding onto that, too many victims are not aware of their legal rights. I agree that the victim's family would be well advised to consult with a local personal injury lawyer.
