A motorist has sustained injuries in a Los Angeles car accident after being struck by a vehicle on the transition road of a freeway in Cerritos. According to a report in the Pasadena Star News, the injury collision happened on the transition road from the eastbound 91 Freeway to the northbound 605 Freeway the morning of December 13, 2009. California Highway Patrol officials said the person got out of a Jeep to work on it and was struck by a passing vehicle. The extent of the person's injuries is not known.

My heart goes out to this victim and their family for what they are going through. I hope and pray that this person's injuries were not major and that he or she makes a speedy and complete recovery. This injured victim will be in my prayers.

Los Angeles Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), five fatalities and 434 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in Cerritos. In Los Angeles County, 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries occurred in 2007 involving car accidents. Also, countywide, pedestrian accidents claimed 210 lives and injured 5,095 people during the same year.

This news report has very little detail on how or why this accident occurred. There are still many questions here. Where exactly was the Jeep at the time of the collision? Was it stopped at the shoulder? How fast was the other vehicle going? Was the other driver distracted, traveling too fast or negligent at the time of the accident?

What Caused the Accident?

I trust CHP investigators are asking these and many more questions to determine what caused this accident. This is also an important reminder for all of us to be careful out on the freeways. It's extremely dangerous to leave your vehicle while on the freeway, even when you believe that you are safely parked on the shoulder.

The victim in this case would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will keep up with the official investigation and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. If there was a dangerous condition on this roadway that caused or contributed to this accident, the governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could also be held liable. Please remember that any claim against a California governmental agency must be promptly filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.
