Accident News For Attorneys, the Legal Field & the Public
A 43-year-old man sustained major injuries in a Riverside car accident after he was struck while walking down a local roadway. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the injury collision occurred the night of July 27, 2010 on Grand Avenue near Blanche Drive. California Highway Patrol officials say the pedestrian was struck from behind by a vehicle described as an older gray or silver Honda. The pedestrian suffered serious injuries including fractured ribs and head trauma. The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian fled the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact CHP officials at 951-506-2000.
My heart goes out to this injured pedestrian and his family. I wish him the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep this victim in your thoughts and prayers.
Pedestrian Accidents
According to CHP's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 11 deaths and 67 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in the unincorporated areas of Riverside County. Also, countywide, 30 people died and 338 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year.
Hit-and-Run
Based on this news report, the pedestrian was walking along a dark stretch of the roadway when he was struck from behind. In this case, the driver left the scene of the accident. California law requires motorists not only to remain at the scene of a crash, but also to exchange information with other parties involved and administer aid to the injured victim.
California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." I trust this suspect will soon be apprehended and brought to justice.
Protecting Victims' Rights
In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to consult with an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims and their families about how their car insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run crash or to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
