Kevin Hiroshi Imura, 19, was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident in Sacramento after colliding with another biker during an illegal street race. According to a news report in The Sacramento Bee, the fatal crash occurred the night of July 18, 2010 near the intersection of Freestone Way and Edington Drive. Police found Imura lying in the street with serious injuries. He died at the scene.

Authorities have determined that Imura was racing with another motorcyclist when the two collided. Imura lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. The rider of the other motorcycle and Imura are believed to be part of a group of 20 motorcyclists involved in street racing at the time. Charges against the other racer are pending an official investigation.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Kevin Hiroshi Imura for their tragic and untimely loss. This story is yet another example of the tragic and devastating consequences of street racing. I offer my deepest condolences to this grieving family. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Street Racing Statistics and Law

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were reports of 135 fatal car accidents that involved street racing in 2001, a number that had almost doubled since 2000. The California Office of Traffic Safety reports that there were more than 800 citations issued for street racing in 2001. Also, nationwide, statistics show that 49 people are injured for every 1,000 people who participate in illegal street racing.

Racing on a public roadway is illegal under California law. California Vehicle Code section 23109 (a) states: "A person shall not engage in a motor vehicle speed contest on a highway. As used in this section, a motor vehicle speed contest includes a motor vehicle race against another vehicle, a clock, or other timing device. For purposes of this section, an event in which the time to cover a prescribed route of more than 20 miles is measured, but where the vehicle does not exceed the speed limits, is not a speed contest."

Protecting Their Rights

I trust officials are still looking into different aspects of this incident. Who were all involved in this race? How did it begin? Did someone challenge Imura to the race? These are all important questions that must be answered. In such cases, victims' families would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Sacramento personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are preserved.

In your opinion, what are some ways by which street-racing can be eradicated from our communities? How can we make our neighborhoods safer?
