Accident News For Attorneys, the Legal Field & the Public
A driver sustained critical injuries in a Costa Mesa car accident after losing control of his vehicle on the connector between the 73 and 55 freeways the morning of February 1, 2010. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury accident happened after an older model BMW drove off the connector, rolled over and landed on its roof. The driver was ejected from the vehicle. He sustained major injuries and was transported to the trauma center at a local hospital.
I sympathize deeply with this injured victim who apparently suffered life-threatening injuries in this car accident. I hope and pray that he makes it through these injuries and has a complete recovery. Please keep him in your prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 11 fatalities and 855 injuries involving car accidents in Costa Mesa. In Orange County as a whole, 178 deaths and 14,185 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2007.
Car Accident Causes and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it is not clear who or what caused this major injury accident. The article does not indicate impairment, drowsiness or distraction as a cause. Was there a vehicle defect or a mechanical malfunction that caused him to lose control? Was another vehicle involved? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway or debris, which caused this accident? I trust the answers to these questions will help determine what caused this accident.
It is also interesting to note that the driver was ejected from the vehicle. That raises the question of whether he was wearing his seatbelt or whether he was ejected as a result of seat restraint system failure. If it is determined that the victim's critical injuries were caused by a defective seatbelt, the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective product could be held liable. In such cases victims or their families would be well-advised to contact a reputed Costa Mesa personal injury lawyer
who has successfully handled auto product liability lawsuits, especially those dealing with seatbelt defects.
